Back When I was a KID!

I saw this post on facebook and I had to laugh!  I can't believe that I'm already old enough to even be saying BACK WHEN I WAS A KID!!!  I can remember my Dad saying things like, "Back when I was a kid, I would have to milk cows before I made the LONG walk in the snow to the Bus stop."  It never occurred to me that one day, I would be saying "BACK WHEN I WAS A KID." So, here's the post I copied from Facebook.
IF YOU WERE RAISED ON HEE HAW, HAD A CRUSH ON ANY OF THE DUKES, ONLY WATCHED CARTOONS ON SATURDAY MORNING, PLAYED IN THE DIRT, GOT YOUR BUTT WHIPPED WITH A BELT OR HAD TO PICK YOUR OWN SWITCH, HAD A ROTARY PHONE, HAD 3 TV CHANNELS, SCHOOL STARTED WITH THE "PLEDGE", HAD A BEDTIME, RODE IN BACK OF PICKUP TRUCKS, RECORDED THE TOP 40 FROM RADIO ON CASSETTE TAPES, PLAYED IN THE CREEK, RODE YOUR BIKE ALL DAY WITHOUT A HELMET, & YOU STILL TURNED OUT OK...RE-POST THIS & REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES!!!!!!!!

I don't think I was raised on Hee Haw, but I'm not sure, but I was raised on the NEW EPISODES of the Golden Girls and The Cosby Show.  I think they came on Friday or Saturday night and we watched them every week.  I think I've seen every episode of the Golden Girls at least 100 times if not more.  My Mom would make Pizza out of a box and root beer floats and we would sit down, eat Pizza and watch the Golden Girls.

I do remember cartoons on Saturday and maybe some after School, but Saturday was definitely the Big Cartoon day. We would get up, make our cereal and settle down for a little Pee Wee's Playhouse (I know, I can't believe I was amused by that) while my Parents slept in.  When my Dad got up, we would watch Looney Tunes.  That was his favorite!

I certainly got my share of butt whoopins and I'm sure I deserved every single one of them. That was before kids had so much power.  You could whip your kid in the grocery store without everyone staring at you or getting out their phone to video it all just to put it on You Tube and get a big scandal going.    I don't remember my parents ever having us pick a switch.  I remember yard sticks, belts, a hand, an occasional pull of the pony tail as I was trying to get away.  You know, NORMAL stuff!  I don't think I ever took a beating!

I so remember wearing out my Cassette player.  I had labeled cassette tapes out the WAZOO!!  I would call into the radio station, request a song and sit with my finger on the record button waiting for it to play.  GEEZ, We've come a long way.

I remember having to actually GET UP and change the TV station or adjust the volume.  There was no Direct TV or Dish Network.  There were antennas on the top of the television with foil on the tips so we could get better reception.  As far as Video Games, we had to sit right in front of the TV because there was no WIRELESS capabilities!  First came Atari and then came Nintendo!  I remember I thought we were BIG TIME when we got our Nintendo for Christmas.

When I was a Teenager, it was all about the BIG BANGS and BIG HAIR!  I remember standing in front of the mirror for what seemed like days trying to get my bangs as high as I could and using practically a whole bottle of hairspray trying to get it too hold.  I can't even tell you how many times I would have to wash my bangs in the sink just to get the flakes out so I could start over.  When the girls and I would have plans to go dancing (I wasn't allowed, but ....Confession, I did it anyway) we would start getting ready at 6:00pm just to be able to leave the house by 9:00pm.   I'm glad that phase is OVER!!!

Before Cell phones, there were BEEPERS!!!!  What a joke!!! Even if you got a beep, if you were in the car, you would have to find a pay phone and pull over.  (Especially if there was a 911 after the number)

BOYS:  I wish I knew then what I know now.  I would never want to feel those, "MY LIFE IS OVER AND I CAN'T GO ON" feelings after a break up.  Unfortunately, some things never change and I'm sure I will have to go through all of that craziness once my daughters are old enough to date.  I wish when I told them, that this too shall pass and he will not be the last person you will ever love, my daughters would believe me, but they won't.  I pray that they won't, but I'm sure they will have to go through the agonizing pain of a boy not feeling the same way about them as they do about him.  Live and learn!

  2. It's weird to think how much the world has changed just in our life time.
